Dr. Dorottya Nagy-Szakal

Dorottya Nagy-Szakal, M.D., Ph.D., is Chief Medical Officer at Biotia and a Research Assistant Professor at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. She earned her medical degree and doctorate in clinical medicine from Semmelweis University in Budapest. Following her graduate studies, she pursued postdoctoral research in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, and later at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

With more than 15 years of experience in translational medicine and clinical metagenomics, Dr. Nagy-Szakal has led pioneering research in next-generation sequencing diagnostics for difficult-to-diagnose infections, fecal microbiota transplantation, the gut–brain axis, and multi-omics approaches. Her work has also contributed to pandemic response efforts during COVID-19. She has authored over 30 scientific articles and book chapters in leading journals, including JAMA, Nature Communications, Cell, mBio, and Scientific Reports.

At Biotia, Dr. Nagy-Szakal directs clinical operations, medical affairs, and research and development laboratory efforts, while also coordinating with regulatory and public health organizations. Earlier in her career, her research focused on pediatric inflammatory and immune-mediated gastrointestinal conditions, using metagenomic and epigenetic analyses to investigate mucosal gene expression, DNA methylation, and microbiome dynamics in pediatric ulcerative colitis.
